Oklahoma raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first, but soon trailed 8-6, before claiming the set 25-18. The two teams played a close second set with neither side grabbing a lead better than three points until the Sooners went up 17-13; eventually winning, 25-20.
Tulsa battled back to win the third, 25-18, and led by as many as nine. The win for the Golden Hurricane snapped a streak of 14 consecutive sets won by Oklahoma. The Sooners last dropped set number two to No. 25 BYU at the Portland State Tournament on September 7. Tulsa went on to win a marathon fourth set, 31-29, to force the decisive fifth set.
Oklahoma won the fifth, 15-13. The Sooners are now 2-1 in five set matches this season as they improved to 35-2 all-time against the Golden Hurricane.
Early in the second, senior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin (Midwest City, Okla.) notched her 10th kill of the night; giving her double-digits in all 11 matches this season. She wound up with a season-high 25, the last of which came as the winner on match-point in the fifth. McLaurin also tallied her first double-double of the season with 10 blocks.
In just two sets, sophomore libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) set a career-high in digs with 22. She went on to finish the match with 40, becoming the first Sooner with 30 digs or more in a match since Maria Fernanda had 31 against Missouri on October 5, 2011.
Sophomore outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) finished second on the team with 19 kills and hit a team-best .349 for the match. Senior outside hitter Keila Rodriguez(Gurabo, Puerto Rico) contributed her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 23 digs.
Sophomore setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) was the third Sooner to record a double-double as she posted 33 assists and 12 digs. Off the bench, junior setter Kaitlyn Drawe(Lee’s Summit, Mo.) chipped in with 18 assists, eight digs and four kills.
The Sooners are at home this weekend to host the NIKE Invitational. Action starts at McCasland Field House at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 19 against Nebraska-Omaha.
