Do you like this story?
With 1:50 left in the first half, indispensable senior Whitney Hand crumpled to the Lloyd Noble Center court, writhing in pain as she reached for her left knee. In a moment, the only thing you could hear among 4,938 shocked fans was Hand howling in tears.
She had driven into the lane in transition and planted to attempt a shot amid North Texas defenders. Her left knee buckled as she did so. Mean Green coach Mike Petersen reached her immediately, as the accident occurred on his end of the court.
“I told her ‘Hang in there,’?” he said. “When that kind of competitor makes that noise, you know something’s wrong.”
Coale followed right after. She sensed immediately it was a terrible injury, that Hand had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.
“I’ve watched them fall. There’s a way they fall, there’s a way they scream,” Coale said. “I’m not a doctor. I can’t give you any diagnosis. I just know what I saw.” (Tulsa World)
