Johnson named Big 12 offensive player of the week: Manual Johnson (Oklahoma), Trent Hunter (Texas A&M) and Nate Swift (Nebraska) have been named Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week as selected by a media panel. All three received their first career weekly award. (Big 12 Sports PR)

Playing against the nation's top-ranked defense, Manual Johnson set a school record with 206 receiving yards on five receptions in OU's 35-10 win over No. 24 TCU. He broke Mark Clayton's record of 190 yards against Texas in 2003. Johnson also became the second player in OU history to record three plays of 55+ yards in the same game, joining Antonio Perkins (three punt returns against UCLA in 2003). Johnson recorded touchdown receptions of 79, 55 and 63 yards against the Horned Frogs and averaged 41.2 yards per reception.

Braxton held out of Monday's practice: Oklahoma senior right tackle Branndon Braxton - the Sooners' top reserve offensive lineman - missed practice Monday with an injury, OU coach Bob Stoops said. Stoops said, however, that Braxton is expected to practice Tuesday in preparation for the top-ranked Sooners' game Saturday at Baylor. Braxton appeared to injure his lower leg Saturday in OU's home win against TCU. Injury update: Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Sunday that no injury concerns emerged from the TCU game. "Don't have any reports of anything major," Stoops said. Reserve cornerback Jonathan Nelson was on crutches after the game, but that was due to a knee injury suffered during OU's off week. Stoops said he'd be out a "few weeks." (The Oklahoman)

Johnson sets receiving record: On an offense loaded with playmakers, Johnson was the most lethal Saturday, finishing with five catches for 206 yards and three touchdowns. The 206 yards set a Sooner record for receiving yards in a game, eclipsing Mark Clayton's 190 yards against Baylor in 2003. "Manny Johnson had such a huge game," coach Bob Stoops said. "I told him I thought that was one of the best performances we've had by a wide receiver here in 10 years." (The Oklahoman)
Bradford's performance: Sam Bradford's career-best 411 passing yards is the third-most all-time by a Sooner quarterback. In addition, Bradford's 202 first-quarter passing yards set an OU record for passing yards in the opening quarter by a Sooner quarterback.
Williams injured: OU right tackle Trent Williams left the game in the second quarter with a sprained ankle, according to OU coach Bob Stoops. Williams was hurt when Bradford was sacked and his momentum carried him onto the side Williams' leg. Williams played in the second half. He limped off the field at the end of the game with his foot heavily taped. (Tulsa World)

Oregon State defeats No. 1 USC: Less than two weeks ago, Southern California established itself as the country's top team when it routed No. 5 Ohio State. Rekindling the magic of the glory years of Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush was short-lived and its national championship hopes are in jeopardy. Oregon State stunned the visiting Trojans, 27-21, Thursday night for the first jaw-dropping upset of the season. Mel Kiper: Oh boy... in the NFC West, you have (Matt) Hasselbeck, Trent Green, JT O'Sullivan and Kurt Warner. But you can't compare the two. The Big 12 has some great college QBs. The best is Sam Bradford. By far. It's not even close when you project to the NFL. He's tremendously accurate. Unbelieveable smarts and intelligence. He's tall. Makes great decisions. ESPN College GameDay to feature Sam Bradford: ESPN College Gameday's Desmond Howard was in Norman Wednesday filming a piece on Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford against the backdrop of Bradford's favorite hobby, golf. TCU denies spying on OU: UPDATE: Oklahoma closed its preseason scrimmages this season. Well-connected Tulsa World columnist Dave Sittler linked the move to the Horned Frogs' 17-10 upset of OU in 2005. He suggested OU coach Bob Stoops closed the scrimmages because he felt "information some friends of the TCU program picked up watching the scrimmages" in 2005 helped the Horned Frogs beat the Sooners. Patterson raised the subject following his team's win over Stanford on Sept. 13 and addressed it again in a phone interview Sunday. The Horned Frogs taped the publicly available TV broadcast of Oklahoma's spring game, Patterson said, looking for schemes and personnel. "As far as us watching their practices, I took a little bit of offense that they would think that I would have someone go and spy on their practices, because, absolutely, that did not happen," Patterson said. "But did we watch the spring tapes as far as the spring game? We did, and I watched all summer." (More at Dallas Morning News)(9/22/08)
UPDATE: Bob Stoops acknowledged Tuesday that he closed preseason scrimmages this season not because he was concerned about spies feeding information to this week's opponent, TCU, but because the Sooners were trying out a new offense. "I think it's pretty obvious why we closed practices," Stoops said during his weekly press luncheon. "I think our no-huddle offense has been pretty obvious we didn't want to let on how much we were using it, all our terminology at the line of scrimmage -- even defensively, our terminology going against it, all of that is pretty obvious why we didn't want anyone being at our practices."(Tulsa World)

Mensik suffers ankle injury: Third-string tight end Eric Mensik has a broken ankle and will be out for at least a month, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Tuesday. Mensik suffered the injury in practice during the Sooners' open week when a teammate fell on his ankle during a blocking drill. The sophomore from Rosenberg, Texas, saw significant action in a 55-14 victory over Washington two weeks ago. (The Oklahoman)
Stoops not ready to play R.J. Washington yet: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday that he's not ready to burn a year of eligibility yet for freshman defensive end R.J. Washington. Stoops said Washington is still getting adjusted to the Sooners' defense. "If you just play a 4-3 and let those guys get wide and go, then he'd be in there," Stoops said. "There is just so much when you zone blitz. Who's dropping? Who's blitzing. Where you're blitzing. Is he twisting around somebody or is he going straight? R.J. is a bright, young guy who is doing great. We're probably just a little bit too complex in all that we ask these guys to do. We just fear that we're going to play him and, through the whole year, it's not going to be enough to warrant giving up his year." (Dallas Morning News)
Stoops open to moving conference games earlier: [The] OU coach was asked if he would be willing to play a Big 12 Conference opponent over the first few weeks of a season, thereby bumping one of the nonconference games down the calendar a bit. "I'd be open to it," he said. "I see the benefits for your crowd and for media and fan interest and college football's interest, to have a conference game somewhere in there early." As to how soon into a season Stoops would feel comfortable playing a conference foe? "I'd prefer three (weeks)," he said. "Sometimes two's enough, depending on how many guys you have coming back." Sooner great Plato Andros dies: Plato Andros, who after fighting the Nazis in World War II became a 1946 football all-American at the University of Oklahoma, died Monday. He was 86. Andros was a guard for Jim Tatum's 1946 Sooners. He distinguished himself with a superb defensive performance against Army that season. The Cadets were one of college football's all-time greatest teams and hadn't lost in three years, but '45 Heisman Trophy winner Glenn Davis was held to 19 yards on 12 carries. Army broke out of a 7-7 halftime tie and won 21-7. Andros served four years with the Coast Guard. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Rose Hill Cemetery Chapel. Family will receive friends at Norman's Primrose Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. (The Oklahoman)

Former OU recruit Josh Jarboe ruled ineligible: Josh Jarboe, the ex-Oklahoma recruit who was dismissed by Bob Stoops this summer, has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA. Jarboe transferred to Troy in mid-August. His appeal to play this season was denied by the NCAA two weeks ago, the Dothan (Ala.) Eagle reported Monday. Troy plays Oklahoma State Saturday. DeMarcus Granger opts for rehabilitation on foot: Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said that Sooner defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger has elected to rehabilitate his injured left foot rather than undergo potentially season-ending surgery. Granger incurred the injury during the Sept. 13 game at Washington. Stoops added that Granger should be out of action three-four weeks, "and then we'll just see from there." (SoonerSports PR)
Crowder Football Scholarship fund: Sooner fans wishing to send contributions to the Eddie Crowder Football Scholarship fund are being asked to send checks payable to the OU Foundation to OU Athletics, 180 W. Brooks St., Norman, OK, 73019. Crowder, who played quarterback at OU in the 1950s, died Sept. 9 in a Lafayette, Colo., hospital from complications of leukemia. He was 77. (The Oklahoman)

Stoops on Granger injury: Coach Bob Stoop on DeMarcus Granger injury... "There's something in the tendon and the bone and they (OU physicians) are experimenting on whether to let it heal or take four weeks and see if DeMarcus can come back, or the other thing is to possibly do surgery and pin it," OU coach Bob Stoops said following Wednesday's practice. "DeMarcus and the doctors are uncertain. I know it's been reported that he's done for the year. That isn't the case yet. If he gets it pinned, he obviously will be. If he doesn't, he could be out four or five weeks. We'll just see." (Norman Transcript)
OU's practice schedule: With an idle Saturday, the Sooners altered their practice schedule slightly this week. "Our Tuesday and Wednesday as we go through the week are usually pretty heavy," Stoops said. "They go against each other a lot on inside drill and team sessions. We try to keep each other sharp. Blitz periods, we come after each other. We'll do that Tuesday and Wednesday and probably part of Thursday." (Tulsa World)
Moore to see more action: The Sooners plan to keep their four-man rotation at defensive tackle with or without Granger. Junior Cordero Moore will move up to Granger's spot. "I think he'll do a good job," defensive tackles coach Jackie Shipp said of Moore. "We'll keep working at it and we'll get him ready." Moore saw his first action of the season in the Washington game. DeMarcus Granger out at least 4 weeks: Oklahoma junior defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger of Kimball will be out at least a month and could miss the rest of the season because of a left foot injury he suffered Saturday in a win at Washington, Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Wednesday. Stoops said that Granger and team physicians are considering two treatment options. One option is to allow the foot to heal, which Stoops said could take four to five weeks. The other is to undergo surgery and have a pin inserted into his foot, which would cause Granger to miss the remainder of the season. Stoops said he would make an announcement on the choice that is made once a decision on the treatment has been reached. (Dallas Morning News)

Dallas officials unveil Cotton Bowl renovations: Today, city officials are set to reveal the biggest transformation in the Cotton Bowl's 78-year history, a $57 million upgrade that added more than 16,000 seats to its end zones, finishing out the ends of its oval bowl with upper-level decks and bringing its total capacity to 92,200. It's a change Cotton Bowl backers hope will mean a brighter future for a facility that many have dismissed as having its best days behind it. "I don't think there is a bad seat in the stadium anymore," said Fair Park's general manager Daniel Huerta as he looked out over the field from the top of the north end-zone seats. OU-Washington tops local television ratings: ESPN telecasts topped the week with a 28.5 for Oklahoma's rout of Washington on Saturday night and a 19.7 for the Cowboys-Eagles scorefest. ESPN's national audience for the Monday night game was the largest ever in cable television history with a 13.3 rating, representing 12,953,000 homes. (The Oklahoman)

Stoops not paying attention to rankings: For now, Sooner coach Bob Stoops isn't paying much attention. "In the end, it's a long year," he said. "All we can focus on is being the absolute best we can be each time we play. "(The ranking) really doesn't do anything to us right now. We have so many more games to play." As the season evolves, Stoops said, the rankings become more relevant. "It's a long way to earn your way to something like that," he said. "That's what our focus will be on, earning it. Earn it each week and not get ahead of yourself." (The Oklahoman)

FSN to air Oklahoma-TCU; 6 p.m. kickoff: Fox Sports Network has picked Oklahoma's next game, a Sept. 27, bout with TCU, and has set the kickoff time for 6 p.m. The OU-TCU game is sold out, although officials said that there is a possibility of a ticket sale late next week depending on the number that are returned. DeMarcus Granger suffering from a sprained left foot: Oklahoma junior defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger of Kimball suffered a sprained left foot late in the first half Saturday against Washington on a play in which Huskies' players appeared to rough him up. "There looked to be some of that," OU coach Bob Stoops said Monday. "Unfortunate any time any of that happens. There is always a lot of rough and tough play inside. Nobody here's whining about it." Granger suffers leg injury: The Sooners' only problem of the night came during the final drive of the first half, when DeMarcus Granger went down with a left leg injury. The junior defensive tackle, among OU's four-man rotation at defensive tackle, returned to the sideline in the second half on crutches and with a black boot around his lower leg. (Tulsa World)
Kickoff coverage changes: OU made two personnel changes on its kickoff coverage Saturday night. Backup linebacker Austin Box and fullback Matt Clapp replaced backup linebackers Mike Balogun and J.R. Bryant on the unit. (Norman Transcript)

Washington expected to play: Defensive ends coach Chris Wilson said that freshman defensive end R.J. Washington likely will play for the first time this season Saturday against Washington. "We're expecting to see him this week," Wilson said. "He's had a really good week of practice." The Sooners have lost two defensive ends since the season started, prompting the OU coaches to consider pulling Washington out of redshirt. First, senior John Williams left the team. Then, redshirt freshman Frank Alexander was stabbed in the arm during a party and is not expected back until TCU in two weeks at the earliest. "We just need to keep getting R.J. reps, and if we do, I'll believe he'll really pay off for us later in the season," Wilson said. Washington was considered the gem of the 2008 recruiting class after being rated by many as the top high school defensive end in the nation. (The Oklahoman)
